Bringing a glimpse of Thailand to Turkey

The Royal Thai Embassy, Ankara, is bringing a glimpse of Thailand to
Turkey through the “Thailand through Turkish Eyes / Turkey through Thai Eyes”
Dual Friendship Photography Exhibition being held at the Dogan Tasdelen Cagdas
Sanatler Merkezi between 3 – 10 June 2021.
“There is a saying in Thai “Hearing 10 people talking about something can
never compare with seeing it with your own eyes. So, the Royal Thai Embassy is
immensely proud to be able to offer you a glimpse of Thailand and bring a part of
Thailand to you as seen through the eyes of the Turkish academic and journalists.
And also, we are proud to show you the beauty of your country, Turkey, through
the eyes of the Thai diplomats who have been working here in Ankara.”
Mr. Charkrienorrathip “Shakir” Sevikul, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Royal Thai
Embassy said at the Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition on 2 June 2021, which
was attended by about 100 guests.
“There are photos here of the views, cities, people, foods and ways of life.
Every picture is not only worth a thousand words, but they also have a story to tell,
and through these pictures it is hope that we can all see that Thailand and Turkey
has similarities that make us feel very much at home in each other’s countries.”
Mr. Sevikul continued.
The Charge d’Affaires a.i. informs that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic,
the Royal Thai Embassy had invited leading Turkish academics and members of
the press to Thailand in 2018 to celebrate the 60 th Anniversary of the establishment
of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which continued in 2019. The
aim of the visit was to promote academic cooperation between the Thai and
Turkish academics, and enable to Turkish to learn more about Thailand first hand,
while also allowing the Thai public to learn more about Turkey also.
“Unfortunately, COVID-19 has meant that traveling has become very
difficult, not only for the academic delegation but also for normal tourists. Prior to
the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand was a popular tourist destination for Turkish
people, with over 70,000 Turkish tourists visiting Thailand. On the other hand,
Turkey is also very popular with Thai tourists, with over 50,000 Thai tourists
visiting Turkey.” Mr. Sevikul said.

The Embassy thus decides to bring a glimpse of Thailand to the Turkish
public to alleviate the longing to travel, and the missing of visiting exotic places
such as Thailand, by showcasing photographs taken by the Turkish academic and
media who joined the Embassy’s arranged trips.
“The Royal Thai Embassy wishes to express its appreciation to the Cankaya
Belediyesi for the support and cooperation which had made the Exhibition
possible.” Mr. Sevikul concluded.
Visitors to the Exhibition will be able to see photographs taken by prominent
Turkish academics such as Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Bağci, President of Foreign Policy
Institute, Prof. Dr. Tanju Tosun and Prof. Dr. Gülgün Erdoğan Tosun from Ege
University, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Berk Esen from Sabanci University. There are also
photographs from leading Turkish journalists such as Mr. Serhat Önalp, Editor-in-
Chief of Diplomatic Observer magazine, Mr. Haşim Kilic, award winning
photographer from Hurriyet Newspaper, Mr. Ferhat Yüksel, Editor-in-Chief of
Demarche Magazine, Ms. Funda Karayel, from Sabah Newspaper, Ms. Sema
Akbaş from Bitter Magazine, and Mr. Mustafa Kirikcioğlu from Daily Sabah.
The photographs of Turkey at the Exhibition were taken by the Thai
diplomats and their spouses who have been living and working in Turkey for many
years, namely : Mr. Charkrienorrathip “Shakir” Sevikul, Charge d’Affaires a.i.,
Mrs. Bangorn Sevikul, Spouse of the Charge d’Affaires, Ms. Nattamon
